Who decides where and how long you serve??

Hi guys,
I was born in Taiwan but now I live in the States. My dad used to tell me stories about serving in the Taiwanese millitary.
I am wondering how long does each person have to serve today? And who gets to decide which branch of the millitary you serve in?

Is it like a job where you get paid and other benefits such as insurance?
A friend of mine served in the US Marine Corps. And he got to go to college for free after that.
Is there any benefit in serving in the Taiwanese military?...

There is no Chinese input software in the computer I am using, so I use English as alternative, please bear with my poor English.

Since it is obligation to serve in Taiwanese military services if you are holding Taiwan citizen, you need to serve within 1 year currently.

As regarding to the benefit of serving in the Taiwanese military, I would tell you that the benefit is based on your performance and what you think of serving in the military rather than what you can get after this serving. Your friend served in the US military services could be due to the trade rather than "compulsory condition".
